DELIGHTFUL DIGESTION

Have you ever wondered what happens to your sandwich when you have eaten it?
Food is fuel that our busy bodies need...... How does our body get the nutrients out?
Where does the food go?

If we had a magic school bus we might've been able to go on a journey into someones mouth and follow that food! but... instead, Deb gave us a bit of an idea by showing us with a blender!
It was a bit gross!
We learnt about the Digestive System!

With Mum and Dad's help, you could try this at home! Here is what we did.......

Firstly, you need, a kitchen blender, plastic gloves, some food, liquid and a stocking.

Yum! Yum! time to eat!  Sophie gobbles up a homey sandwich

We used a blender to illustrate what happens to the food when it is in your mouth. We put in a sandwich,  a kiwi fruit and pretended to have a drink of water. We tipped in some water.
Then we turned it on!  The blades are like our teeth, chopping up the food into smaller pieces. The food then mixes with our saliva to make the food softer and easier for us to swallow.

ooooooh! Did we really eat that?  YUCK!!  Down... down... down it goes into our Ospohagus (food tube)
This takes it down into our stomach where acid works on our food to break it down.

This next part was a bit of a messy job!
We showed the food going from the stomach into the small intestine (stockings)
The small intestines squeeze our food. The good nutrients from our food disappear out through small hair like Villi out into our bloodstream. This is how our body is fueled for energy!

From the small intestine, anything our body doesn't need to use, goes into the large intestine.
This is where our poo comes from! OUT IT COMES! Toilet anyone?

WOW! this was fun!
